Whack-A-Word – See a Word, Whack It!
Review by on
Right now, at the super secret headquarters of FindMySoft, it is a pretty gloomy and bleak day. It’s been raining all day long, it’s cold, and it is a real downer of a day. Which got me thinking that when I get off work, I will most likely not want to go for walk, or go out to meet some friends. What I will probably do is play a nice computer game.

Like the Haversack Software-developed game Whack-A-Word. I particularly like this exciting, fast-paced game because I work with words all day long (that’s what editors do – they write, and proofread, and write some more). In the game you will be presented with words – some are genuine words, some are made-up. The goal is to identify the real words and whack them.

If you can identify the real words, whack them. Keep whacking JUST the real words and you will be able to play for a long, long time. The standard game can go on forever. If you don’t want to do that, you can play with a time limit, play until you reach a target number of words, or play a Round Robin Tour of several games and try to get the highest cumulative score.

If you whack a made-up word, that word will remain stuck on the screen. Make another mistake, and that word will also remain stuck on the screen. Make enough mistakes and there will eventually be no more room on the screen for new words to show up. When this happens, the game ends and you lose.

Whack-A-Word presents you with words at a gradually increasing pace. The words are pulled from a 200,000-word dictionary, just to put things in perspective.

Pros
  • 3 different methods of generating fake words
  • 9 different built-in variations of the game
  • Customize the rules
  • Configurable font and color schemes

Cons
  • Limited gameplay
